India joins Japan in AFC U-17 Asian Cup

India were on Thursday drawn in Group D along with Japan, Vietnam and Uzbekistan for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup football tournament to be held in Thailand from June 15 to July 2. The draw ceremony was held in Bangkok. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage.

The four semi-finalist teams will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Peru. Head coach Bibiano Fernandes said in a statement: “We are all thrilled with the group we have been placed in for the draw.We will face quality opponents and the players are looking forward to it. Every footballer wants to play against the best at every level and Japan is certainly one of the best teams in Asia right now.”

“We have played against teams like Vietnam and Uzbekistan in the past and we got some good results against them so we hope to achieve our goal which is to qualify for the (FIFA U-17) World Cup,” he said. The AFC U-17 Asian Cup will be held at four venues, including the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, the Thammasat and BG Stadiums in Pathum Thani and the Chonburi Stadium in Chonburi.
