Modric bows out of the World Cup after losing in the semi-finals

Croatia were knocked out of the World Cup with their semi-final loss to Argentina and the departure of their greatest player, Luka Modric. Modric was replaced by Lovro Maier in the 81st minute with his team trailing by three goals. It was the farewell moment of this great midfielder from the World Cup. The Croatia team, which lost to France in the final four years ago, also left the football tournament after a few minutes.

Modrich, standing on the sidelines, covered his face with his shirt. Clad in red and white, Croatia supporters realized the importance of the moment and stood up to greet their country’s best player. The Argentine fans also stood up to bid farewell to the champion. Before Modric, his 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo also bid farewell to this football legend. Both won numerous titles and trophies with the club but missed out on winning the World Cup. Four million countrymen pinned their hopes on Modric, who led the team to the final in Russia four years ago.

Croatia beat Neymar’s Brazil in the quarter-finals but could not overcome Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Modric, who won the Champions League title five times with Real Madrid and won the FIFA Best Footballer of the Year award in 2018, could play for Croatia again in the 2024 Euro Championship, which will probably be his last tournament for the country.
