Stokes will play only as a specialist batsman in the initial phase of IPL

England Test captain Ben Stokes will play only as a specialist batsman for Chennai Super Kings in the initial phase of the Indian Premier League 2023. The star all-rounder was bought by four-time champions Chennai Super Kings for Rs 16.25 crore in the auction held in December last year. He arrived in India last week and has started training for the season starting March 31. According to the report of ‘ESPN Cricinfo’, Stokes, who has recovered from a knee injury, will initially play as a batsman.

Troubled by persistent injuries to his left knee, Stokes could only bowl nine overs in two Tests on the New Zealand tour. England has to play the Ashes series against Australia in June. CSK batting coach Michael Hussey confirmed that Stokes will not be bowling in the opening matches of the IPL. He said, “I believe he will play only as a batsman. Will have to wait for the bowling. Physios from Chennai and the England and Wales Cricket Board are working with him. I believe he will not bowl much in the first few matches. Hopefully can bowl later.
