Union cabinet approves bill to repeal agricultural laws, to be introduced in winter session
Delhi | The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved ‘The Farm Law Repeal Bill, 2021′ to withdraw three controversial agriculture laws passed by Parliament last year in the wake of year-long protests by farmers’ unions. After the approval of the Union Cabinet, the bill will be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament which will begin on November 29 and is expected to continue till December 23. The Union Agriculture Ministry is said to have finalized the bill after consulting with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The Agriculture Laws Repeal Bill, 2021 aims to roll back three bills passed into law last year – Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. PM withdrew all three agricultural laws
In a surprise move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that his government will repeal three agriculture laws through a constitutional process. Addressing the nation on Friday, PM Modi also apologized to the nation and urged farmers, mainly from Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, to end their ongoing agitation and go back home. The Prime Minister had also announced that the government would constitute a committee to work out a new framework for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Licensed trader can buy produce from farmers at mutually agreed prices ( farmer law canceled)
Thousands of farmers have been protesting against the government’s three agriculture laws since the Center passed the law in 2020. There are three agricultural laws – the Farmer Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act provides for the establishment of a permitting mechanism. Farmers to sell their farm produce outside Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs). Any licensed trader can buy produce from farmers at mutually agreed prices. This trade of agricultural products will be free from mandi tax imposed by the state governments. The Agreement on Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act allows farmers to take up contract farming and market their produce freely. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act is an amendment to the existing Essential Commodities Act. ( farmer law canceled)
