Battling father’s illness, Delhi cricket politics, young Suyash shines in IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders’ impact player Suyesh Sharma, who impressed in last night’s win against Royal Challengers Bangalore, has no ‘godfather’ in the corrupt environment of cricket and the leg-spinner, who hails from a middle-class Delhi family, is yet to make his mark. Success has been achieved on the basis of ability. The 19-year-old Suyyash, who hails from East Delhi’s Bhajanpura area, made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut with figures of three for 30 as the Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 81 runs.

The middle-class family has its own problems and then his father is also battling cancer, but he continues to deal with the challenges of cricket despite all the troubles and stress of not having a ‘godfather’. Suyyash took the wickets of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s two wicket-keeper batsmen Dinesh Karthik and Anuj Rawat besides all-rounder Karn Sharma in an IPL match last night.

Delhi coach Randhir Singh told PTI, “It has not been an easy journey for Suyyash. He was a disciple of former Delhi spinner Suresh Batra and played for his club. We lost Sureshji due to Covid-19 and then he (Soyesh) came to me as he wanted match practice. I gave a chance to play for my Madras club in DDCA (Delhi and District Cricket Association) league and ‘Run-Star’ club in open tournaments. The last one year has been very difficult for Suyyash as he does not come from a well-to-do family.

Singh said, “Her father was diagnosed with cancer. But I think he will always be indebted to former Delhi spinner and current Mumbai Indians manager (talent scout) Rahul Singhvi who helped him a lot in his father’s treatment. He said, “I told him that if he needed any help, we could show him at AIIMS as well but thanks to Rahul, his father was treated in Mumbai. He also attended the trials of Mumbai Indians. ,

Club cricket in Delhi is not as lucrative as in Kolkata, Chennai or Mumbai because no club pays a player and there are no official contracts. Singh said, “We have not paid anything to Suyyash as nobody is paid a single penny in Delhi club cricket. If you are professional, playing for India and requested to play then only there is some financial benefit to the player.
