Sri Lanka Cricket to be probed for failing to qualify directly for the World Cup

Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister has constituted a technical committee headed by former legend Sanath Jayasuriya to look into the reasons for the cricket team not getting automatic qualification for the ODI World Cup. Sri Lanka failed to qualify directly for the ICC ODI World Cup after their defeat in the third ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton last month. The team lost the three-match series 0-2 Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe last week appointed a technical committee headed by former legend Sanath Jayasuriya.

It includes three other former national players. The first meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday. The Sri Lankan cricket team has reached the final of the World Cup twice, including winning the title in 1996, but this is the first time the team has failed to gain automatic qualification for the global tournament. All-rounder Jayasuriya, who played a key role in the team’s title win in 1996, said, “We will ask the team’s coaching team about the reasons for failing to get automatic qualification.” Will demand a short term plan to rectify the same. These are a talented bunch of players and they need to be given confidence. Sri Lanka will take part in a qualifying tournament to be held in Zimbabwe from June 18 to July 9. The ODI World Cup will be held in October-November.
