No more ad hoc appointments, support staff of Indian women’s cricket team will get longer contract

The support staff of the Indian women’s cricket team will henceforth get long-term contracts as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to do away with the practice of appointing them on an ad hoc basis. As per the BCCI constitution, the head coach is to be selected by the Cricket Advisory Committee while the selectors choose the support staff. However, in the case of the women’s cricket team’s support staff (batting, fielding and bowling coaches), the BCCI has not strictly followed these rules in the past and has been appointing coaches on a temporary basis from the National Cricket Academy.

A BCCI source told PTI, “All coaches will be given long-term contracts and it will not be a temporary arrangement like in the past.” This will give the necessary stability to the team. ”This decision was taken in the virtual meeting of the Apex Council on Sunday. The women’s cricket team has been playing without a head coach since the sacking of Ramesh Powar in December last year and even played without the head of the coaching staff in the T20 World Cup in February.

The senior women’s team is yet to win a world title and revamping the coaching process is the first step towards preparing for the next ICC tournament. The agenda of the meeting also included discussion on media rights for the domestic season (both international and domestic tournaments) of 2023-2027 cycle but no concrete decision could be taken on the issue. BCCI has high hopes from media rights for 2023-2027 cycle after getting a whopping amount of Rs 48 thousand 390 crores from IPL media rights.

With Viacom joining the Indian cricket ecosystem, it will be a three-way contest with Star and Sony in attendance. The BCCI has made huge gains by selling the broadcast and digital rights of the IPL separately and is expected to follow the same procedure for international matches at home. Star paid Rs 6138.1 crore for the previous cycle ending March 31.
