Tejaswin Shankar wins decathlon silver in USA, misses national record

Commonwealth Games medalist high jumper Tejaswin Shankar won the decathlon silver medal at the ‘Gym Click Shootout’ tournament in Arizona, USA but missed out on a national record. Tejaswin, who will win the high jump bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, aggregated 7,648 points in 10 events in the decathlon, leaving him 10 points behind the national record held by Bharatinder Singh, who scored 7,658 in 2011. The competition was held at the Tucson campus of the University of Arizona.

Till Stainforth of Nebraska finished first with 7845 points. Tejaswin (24 years) is currently working in the US after completing his college from the University of Kansas. He won the high jump (2.19 m) and the 400 m race (48.41 s). The other eight events were 100 m race, long jump, shot put, 110 m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 m run. Though he missed the national record, his score of 7,648 enabled him to meet the Asian Games standard of 7,500 points set by the Athletics Federation of India. The Delhi-based athlete has recently started competing in decathlon and wants to represent the country in the event in the upcoming Asian Games as well.
