India

it’s a great achievement

The total fertility rate of the country has come down to 2. In 2016 the rate was 2.2. This means that the growth rate of the country’s population is a sign of stabilization. Although the ideal rate is 2.1, but considering the level of population of the country, the rate of 2 is also satisfactory.

The data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) revealed worrying news for India overall. When the total number of malnourished children is increasing in the country and the number of women suffering from anemia is more, then obviously the question will arise that where has the country gone astray? The situation of malnutrition was not good even before. But after independence the overall trend was to decline. Whereas the latest figures have indicated an increase in it. Clearly, there has been a major deviation in the development policy. However, a good news came out of this survey report. That is, the total fertility rate (TFR) of the country has come down to two. In 2016 the rate was 2.2. This means that the growth rate of the country’s population is a sign of stabilization. Although the ideal rate is 2.1, but considering the level of population of the country, the rate of 2 is also satisfactory. Significantly, this achievement of controlling the population has been achieved without coercion.

This success has shown that the right population policy is to develop, spread education and lay emphasis on women empowerment. It is through these measures that India has achieved this success. The survey revealed that except Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, all Phase-II states have achieved the fertility replacement rate (2.1). The Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) has increased from 54 per cent to 67 per cent in almost all Phase-II States/UTs. The use of modern methods of contraceptives has also increased in almost all the states and union territories. The NFHS-5 survey was conducted in about 6.1 lakh sample households in 707 districts of the country. This has made it possible to make different estimates up to the district level. The survey claimed that there has been a marginal improvement in percentage terms in the nutrition of children. But with the increase in population, the total number of children suffering from malnutrition has increased. Therefore, this problem should now be given more attention. To ensure that children get nutritious food, there is a need to increase the budget for programs like Anganwadi. Schemes like mid-day meal should be revived. After the Corona epidemic, it has become more necessary to take such steps.
