Cummins to miss third Test due to family emergency, Smith to lead

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has pulled out of the third Test against India due to a family emergency, with vice-captain Steve Smith taking over to lead the team in the match starting March 1 in Indore. Australia were defeated by six wickets in three days in the second Test last week, after which Cummins returned home. According to ‘cricket.com.au’, “Pat Cummins returned to Australia after the second Test due to a family emergency and the fast bowler will remain at home during the third match next week.”

“According to media reports,” the mother of the Australian team captain is ill and is in ‘palliative care’ (palliative treatment). ”””’ It is expected that Cummins will come back and join the team before the third test but there may be a possibility that he may not play in the fourth test. Smith was named vice-captain in 2021 after Cummins took over from Tim Paine and will lead Australia in Tests for the third time since then. After the second Test, Smith had flown to Dubai with his wife and joined the Australian team in Delhi on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Cameron Green is fit to play in the third Test and is likely to feature in the third Test at the Holkar Stadium. Green suffered a fractured finger, which caused the Australian team’s combination to deteriorate in the first two Tests. Green’s return will give Australia a second seam bowling option. Cummins was the only fast bowler in Delhi. Green told reporters in Delhi on Friday, “When you join the team as an all-rounder, you can probably help the balance of the team a little bit. It will be interesting to see how the selectors choose in this match. Senior fast bowler Mitchell Starc is also expected to be available and could replace Cummins in the playing XI.
