Debate on equality started again with FIFA Women’s World Cup, discussion on salary continues

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has begun. This season of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, female soccer players will receive 25 cents for every dollar their male teammates earned in last year’s FIFA World Cup. Better amount is being given to women than earlier this time. However, women still have a long way to go in terms of pay parity.

One of the biggest sporting events, the FIFA World Cup is off to a great start. In this 32 years old World Cup, this time again discussions have started on such an issue, which has created ruckus many times before. The FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup sees a huge difference in the amount and salary of female and male players. The discussion has started once again regarding this difference.

Even before the opening match between New Zealand and Norway, Women’s World Cup CEO David Beechey has said an important thing on this matter. He said that this women’s tournament is not just about football. It’s about women empowerment, celebrating women’s sports. Please tell that this time the tournament will be played till 20 August. Let us also take a look at the amount that will be paid to women players during this period.

Women players will be given a fourth share compared to men. However, this year women will be given more amount than before. In the World Cup held in the year 2019, women players were given only eight cents on a dollar, which has been increased to 25 cents this year. These figures have been given by FIFA and the Federation Internationale des Association de Footballers Professionnel, the global players’ association.

In fact, before the tournament began, FIFA had announced that out of the record $110 million (Rs 900 crore) prize money of the Women’s World Cup, about $49 million (Rs 402 crore) would be given directly to individual players – at least $30,000 (Rs 24 lakh) for each participant and $270,000 (Rs 2.21 crore) to each player of the winning team. The players hailed the move, calling it “the result of tremendous global collective action from over 150 national team players”.

Same prize money target
Significantly, FIFA is continuously working to reduce this difference of amount between male and female players. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has set a target of equal prize money for men and women at their next World Cups in 2026 and 2027 respectively. Let us tell you that this struggle for pay equality has been a long one. Indeed, in 1991 and 1999 there was zero prize money in the women’s game.
