UK media: Boris Becker released from prison, returns to Germany

German tennis legend Boris Becker has returned home after serving eight months in a UK prison. Baker’s lawyer gave this information on Thursday. Becker, a 55-year-old German who has lived in Britain since 2012, was released on Thursday morning and left for Germany shortly afterwards. Becker’s lawyer, Christian Oliver Moser, said in a statement that Becker “has served his sentence and will not be prosecuted under the penal code in Germany”. Moser, however, did not give any information about where Becker is in Germany.

Three-time Wimbledon champion Baker was sentenced in April to 30 months in prison for illegally transferring huge sums of money after being declared bankrupt. He was convicted by London’s Southwark Crown Court on four charges under the Insolvency Act, including two counts of misappropriating assets, concealing debts and failing to disclose assets. Baker made headlines in 1985 at the age of 17 when he became the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon singles title. The former world number one player was declared bankrupt in June 2017.
