Hockey World Cup: Harmanpreet will be the captain of India

New Delhi. Defender Harmanpreet Singh has been named captain of the 18-member Indian squad for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup to be held in Odisha from January 13. Defender Amit Rohidas will be the vice-captain of the team. Harmanpreet was also the captain of the team in the recent series against Australia in which India won by 1. 4 had to face defeat. Manpreet Singh, who was the captain of the historic bronze medal winning Indian team at the Tokyo Olympics, will be in the team as a player. Coach Graham Reid has been in favor of handing over the captaincy to different players to build a leadership team at the senior level.

The World Cup team has been selected after a two-day trial at the SAI Center in Bengaluru. Young and experienced players have been selected in the team, who will be eyeing to end India’s long wait in the World Cup. Gurjant Singh and Dilpreet Singh, who were part of the Tokyo Olympic team, are not in the main squad but will remain as standbys. A Hockey India selector said, “The team has been selected on the basis of current form and performance. There was no other criteria.” Krishan B Pathak and PR Sreejesh will be the goalkeepers.

This is Sreejesh’s fourth World Cup and playing for the third time on his soil. The defense will be led by captain Harmanpreet while he will be supported by vice-captains Rohidas, Surender Kumar, Varun Kumar, Jarmanpreet Singh and Neelam Sanjeep Sess. The midfield will consist of Vivek Sagar Prasad, Manpreet, Hardik Singh, Neelakanta Sharma, Shamsher Singh and Akashdeep Singh. And the forward line will have Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Abhishek and Sukhjit Singh. The two alternate players will be Rajkumar Pal and Jugraj Singh. On team selection, Reid said: “Having the World Cup at home has added significance and there will be added pressure.”

The Indian team will play the first match against Spain on January 13 at Rourkela’s Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. On this ground, he has to play the second match against England, after which the third match will be against Wales in Bhubaneswar.
