Weight lifting Championship: Bindiyarani finished 25th in women’s 59 kg category

Commonwealth Games medalist weightlifter S Bindiarani Devi finished 25th in the women’s 59kg category at the World Championships. The lifter from Manipur had won a silver medal in the 55 kg category at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He lifted 200 kg (86 and 114) on Thursday. Bindiarani had participated in Group D. In snatch, she lifted 83 kg in the first attempt and 86 kg in the second but could not lift 88 kg in the third attempt. Similarly, his first attempt at 112 kg in the clean and jerk failed because his lift was not clean. He lifted 114 kg in his second attempt.

Mirabai Chanu had won a silver medal in the 49 kg category yesterday. This tournament is the first qualifying tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Under the new rules for Olympic qualification, weightlifters will have to play in the 2023 World Championship and the 2024 World Cup. Apart from this, 2022 World Championship, 2023 Subcontinental Championship, 2023 Grand Prix One and Two and 2024 Subcontinental Championship will have to be played. The International Weightlifting Federation will release the Olympic Qualification Rating (OQR) in each weight category after the qualification round. The top three performances in the qualifying tournaments of each lifter will be counted at the time of final assessment.
