Captain Mathews’ unbeaten half-century helped West Indies beat Ireland

Captain Hayley Mathews scored an unbeaten 66 and shared a 74-run third-wicket partnership with Shenell Henry as West Indies won their Group B match of the ICC (International Cricket Council) Women’s T20 World Cup with a ball to spare against Ireland here on Friday. Recorded a thrilling six-wicket win with the remainder. Opener Mathews hit eight fours and a six in his unbeaten 53-ball knock. Henry hit four fours during his innings of 34 runs in 28 balls.

Orla Prendergast’s innings of 61 (47 balls with six fours and a six) helped Ireland post a competitive 137 for nine. Mathews gave the team victory by hitting a four on the fifth ball of the 19th over. For the West Indies, Shamila Connell took three wickets while Karishma Ramharkh and Affie Fletcher took two wickets each. Mathews took a wicket while performing well with the ball before doing wonders with the bat.

Earlier, Ireland won the toss and elected to bat but Connell removed Amy Hunter (one run) in the second over itself. Opener Gabby Lewis (38) and Prendergast then put on a 90-run partnership for the second wicket to bring the team back. However, after the break of this partnership, the team’s innings faltered. Apart from these two, only Eimear Richardson (15) could score runs in double digits.
