Natraj won the sixth gold medal in the 100m freestyle of the National Games

Olympian Srihari Natraj ended his campaign with a sixth gold medal in swimming at the National Games by securing first place in the men’s 100m freestyle event at the Sardar Patel Swimming Pool Complex here on Saturday. Natraj won the gold medal with a timing of 50.41 s to create a national record. Sajan Prakash (Kerala), senior partner of the Karnataka swimmer, won five gold, two silver and one bronze. On Saturday, Natraj topped the 100m freestyle while Sajan could only finish seventh.

Nataraja won two gold medals in freestyle sprint, two gold in backstroke besides two gold medals for the relay team of Karnataka. SP Likhit made a clean sweep in three men’s backstroke events by winning the 100m event, taking the army’s tally of gold medals to 44, widening the gap with second-ranked Haryana (30 gold). Maharashtra (28 gold) continued to challenge Haryana, which is only two gold short of it. Karnataka has moved up to the fourth position with 23 gold medals, with 19 medals from swimming pool events.

Tamil Nadu is at the fifth position in the medal tally. Gujarat ended the day with 11 gold medals as the host state finished the day with a 2-0 win over Madhya Pradesh in men’s soft tennis. Delhi’s Mohit Sehrawat clinched the gold medal in the men’s 81kg judo event despite a shoulder injury in Gandhinagar. Mohit’s right shoulder was shaken from its place but instead of avoiding further injury, he decided to play the match. Then they won the final match after both the semi-finals.

 In cycling, Karnataka’s Naveen John defended his title in the men’s individual time trial event, while Manipur’s Tongbram Manorama Devi finished first in the women’s 85km road race despite fever and headache. In Waterpolo event, Army won gold medals in men’s and Maharashtra women’s events. Army defeated Kerala 10-8 while Maharashtra defeated Kerala 5-3. Tamil Nadu’s S Vaishnavi won the gold medal in the women’s artistic yoga event with a score of 134.22.

In men’s hockey, Karnataka defeated hosts Gujarat 11-2 to advance to the semi-finals where they will face Haryana, who won 3-0 over Tamil Nadu. Uttar Pradesh advanced to the semi-finals with a 5-4 win over West Bengal in a thrilling penalty shootout to face Maharashtra, who defeated Jharkhand in the final quarterfinals. In boxing, four domestic boxers made it to the quarterfinals. Asifali Asgarli Syed (57kg), Meenakshi Bhanushali (57kg), Paramjit Kaur (66kg) and Ruchita Rajput (75kg) won their matches.
