Preparation to organize Women’s National Camp in Patiala instead of Lucknow in future

A future women’s national wrestling camp will be held at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Patiala center after several women wrestlers expressed “discomfort” over training in Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s bastion. “The ad-hoc committee also decided that in future the national camps will be held at SAI Sonepat (men’s Greco-Roman and freestyle) and SAI Patiala (women’s wrestling),” ad-hoc committee chief Bhupendra Singh Bajwa said in a statement. had reported on Tuesday that there is every possibility of shifting the senior women’s camp from Lucknow.

Many women wrestlers are uncomfortable attending the national camp at the Lucknow SAI center and many parents do not want a joint camp for men and women to be held in Sonipat. A source told PTI, “The joint national camp was discussed in the meeting. It was brought to the notice of the panel members that parents of female wrestlers were not in favor of training their daughters with male wrestlers in Sonipat. So the matters of ‘love affairs’ may increase. This was the reason why the WFI separated the two camps in 2013.

Women wrestlers are comfortable training at Delhi’s IG Stadium but there is no hostel for them to stay here. The SAI center in Patiala does not have a wrestling hall as it was merged with the weightlifting hall. The source said, “There is an option to hold the national camp for women in Gandhi Nagar (Gujarat) but it has to be seen whether the players will agree to go that far.” It was proposed that male wrestlers should be sent to Lucknow and women should train in Sonipat, but the coach and referee were not ready for this.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on April 27 constituted a three-member ad-hoc panel to run the affairs of the sport on the directions of the Sports Ministry after the country’s top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar here. was formed. The protesting wrestlers are demanding Brij Bhushan’s arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting seven women wrestlers, including a minor. Besides Bajwa, the other members of the committee are rifle coach Suma Shirur and a retired high court judge who are yet to be appointed.

The ad-hoc committee on Wednesday said that the selection trials for the U-17 and U-23 Asian Championships, scheduled to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from June 10 to 18, will be held in Sonepat and Patiala from May 17 to 20, respectively. “The selection trials for the upcoming Under-17 and Under-23 Wrestling Asian Championships to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from June 10 to 18 will be held at Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Sonepat and Patiala centers from May 17 to 20,” Bajwa said in a statement. The selection trials for the women’s and men’s Greco-Roman categories will be held at SAI’s Patiala centre, while the selection trials for the men’s freestyle category will be held at Sonipat. Bajwa said, “The selection trials will be open to all wrestlers in the respective age and weight categories. The schedule and other details will be given soon.
