The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is a Hindu nationalist, paramilitary, volunteer organization from India, widely considered to be the parent organization of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the ruling party of India. History of RSS
The RSS was founded in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, a doctor in the city of Nagpur, British India. Hedgewar was a Tilkite Congressman, Hindu Mahasabha politician and political patron of Nagpur-based social activist BS Munje. Munje sent Hedgewar to Calcutta to study his medicine and learn warfare techniques from the secret revolutionary societies of the Bengalis. Hedgewar became a member of the anti-British revolutionary group Anushilan Samiti, which came under its internal circle. The secret methods of these societies were eventually used by them in organizing the RSS.
Its members drew early inspiration from European right-wing groups, such as the Italian Fascist Party, during World War II to form the RSS. Gradually the RSS evolved into a major Hindu nationalist umbrella organization, giving rise to a number of affiliated organizations that established many schools, charities and clubs to spread their ideological beliefs. The RSS was banned once during the British rule and then thrice by the post-independence Indian government. The first time was in 1948 when Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a former member of the RSS. Then the RSS was banned for the third time during the Emergency (1975–1977) and after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.
Hindu ideology of Keshav Baliram Hedgewar
According to Keshav Baliram Hedgewar “Hindu culture is the lifeblood of India. So it is clear that if India is to be protected, then first we must nurture Hindu culture. If Hindu culture perishes in India itself, and if Hindu society ceases to exist, then it would hardly be appropriate to mention the only geographical entity living as Hindustan. Geographical knots alone do not make a nation. The whole society should be in such an alert and organized position that no one dares to cast an evil eye on any point of our honour.
It should be remembered that strength comes from the organization itself. Therefore it is the duty of every Hindu to make every effort to strengthen the Hindu society. The Sangh is only carrying out this supreme task. The present fate of the country cannot be changed unless lakhs of youth dedicate their whole lives to this cause. The supreme aim of the Sangh is to divert the minds of its youth towards that.
Present Form of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
The current head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is Mohan Bhagwat. Mohan Bhagwat’s decisions are very important for the members of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. They also play an important role in political decisions. It has taken a long time to build this credibility of the RSS. Big leaders started their political journey with RSS, RSS has given great Prime Minister like Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the country. Talking about the history of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the history of the Sangh dates back to the pre-independence period. The RSS was founded on 27 September 1925 and has a membership of 5-6 million as of 2014. The organization promotes the ideals of upholding the values of Indian culture and a civil society and propagates the ideology of Hindutva to “strengthen” the Hindu community. This organization has been controversial for several decades. Barring the BJP from 1947 to 2009, when successive governments were in power, it was banned repeatedly. Its critics describe the RSS’s “Hindutva” ideology as communal, conservative and revivalist.
