President to present National Award for outstanding work in the direction of empowerment of disabled

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind will be the chief guest at the International Day of Disabled Celebrations organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment at Vigyan Bhawan. The President will present the National Award for Empowerment of the Disabled on Friday, December 3. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said in a release that President Kovind will present the annual National Awards to individuals, institutions, organizations and state/district etc. for their outstanding achievements and work towards empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar will preside over the function. While Union Ministers of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, A Narayanaswamy and Pratima Bhowmik will also be present on the occasion. ( International Day of Disabilities)

Events organized on International Day of Disabilities

On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities i.e. 3rd December, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment presents national awards to individuals, institutions, organizations, state/district etc. for their outstanding performance. Every year achievements and work are done towards the empowerment of persons with disabilities and awards are given to them. Till 2017 the award scheme was governed under the National Award Rules, 2013 which provided for 7 categories of disabilities as per the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. However, with the coming into force of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the number of persons with disabilities specified under the new law increased from 7 to 21 on April 19, 2017.

Accordingly all the 21 persons with disabilities are covered under the National Award Guidelines which have been notified in the Gazette of India Extraordinary on 2nd August, 2018. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) has written to State Governments/Union Territory Administrators and Central Ministries/Departments seeking nominations for National Awards in various categories. Advertisements are also published in national/regional language dailies to give wide publicity to the awards. The detailed scheme of the National Awards as well as the advertisement issued for inviting applications are displayed in a downloadable format on the website of the Department.
