Bad weather caused Rawat’s helicopter crash

New Delhi. The Joint Court of Inquiry, which probed the helicopter crash of former Army Chief and country’s first Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, has made its preliminary findings public. The Air Force said on Friday that the pilot’s disorientation in bad weather caused the accident. In the joint investigation of the three armies, the possibility of any conspiracy behind this accident has been ruled out. Its preliminary findings were conveyed to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh a few days ago.

On Friday, the Indian Air Force said that the Court of Inquiry of the three services has submitted its preliminary findings report regarding the helicopter crash on December 8, 2021. Significantly, CDS General Bipin Rawat and 13 others died in this accident. According to this report – on December 8, due to an unexpected change in the weather, the helicopter entered the clouds and due to this the accident happened. The pilot was disoriented as he got stuck in the clouds. This report ruled out mechanical failure, sabotage, demolition or negligence as the causes of the helicopter crash.

The investigation team analyzed the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder besides interrogating all available witnesses to ascertain the probable cause of the accident. According to the preliminary findings report- the accident was caused due to the entry of clouds due to unexpected change in weather in the valley. As a result, the pilot deviated from his designated routes. Based on its findings, the Court of Inquiry has made certain recommendations, which are under review.
