PTI Fact Check: FIFA will not keep Pele’s leg in museum, social media post claims false

A Facebook post on late football player Pele claimed that his leg would be kept in a museum with the consent of his family, but a fact check by PTI found the claim to be false and the global football governing body FIFA also called it misleading. Pele, one of the best football players in the world, died on 29 December. The Facebook post about Pele’s leg being placed in the museum was written on January 3.

The post went viral due to its worldwide popularity and many more such posts were shared on social media. ‘PTI’ started the fact check of this post with Google search ‘Pele’s foot will be kept in museum’. No news related to this was found. After this, an attempt was made to find any such announcement on FIFA’s official website and social media handles but nothing related to it was found.

TNT Sports was cited in the picture shared by it in the social media post, but a search on TNT’s website and Twitter handle did not reveal any information on the same. After this, a search was done on ‘Google’ for words related to Pele’s death. There was also no news about keeping Pele’s leg in the museum. The ‘King of Football’ was cremated at Santos on January 3. Taking forward the investigation, PTI’s fact chat team e-mailed FIFA.

“We completely refute this claim,” a FIFA spokesman said in an email, concluding that the claim shared on social media about Pele and FIFA was false.
