Lakshya Sen, Tanisha-Ashwini lose in quarterfinals of Indonesia Masters, Indian challenge ends

India’s Lakshya Sen ended an impressive campaign at the Indonesia Masters Super 500 badminton tournament with a quarterfinal loss to Asian Games champion Jonathan Christie here on Friday. World No. 12 Sen could not capitalize on winning the first set as he went down 21-15, 10-21, 13-21 to local player Christie in a 62-minute match. Christie’s world ranking is three.

Later in the day, the new women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Cresto and Ashwini Ponnappa lost 13-21, 18-21 to Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota in the quarterfinals. With their defeat, India’s campaign in the tournament came to an end. In men’s singles, Commonwealth Games champion Sen had a 1-0 head-to-head record against Christie. He started well and was leading 8-5 at one stage. They maintained their lead till the interval.

After this, Christy scored three consecutive points to level the scores at 15-15. The Indian player, however, took the first game by scoring six consecutive points. Sen, however, lost his cool after that while Christie played brilliantly and soon took an 11-2 lead. After this, the Indonesian player did not have to make much effort to win the second game. Christie also started well in the third and deciding game.

They took a 5-1 lead early on. Sen scored four points in a row but the Indonesian did not give him much chance and took a comfortable 11-6 lead at the interval. After this, he scored four consecutive points to win the match. Sen could not go past the second round at the India Open last week as well.
