In a thrilling match, Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by three runs in the last over.

Bangladesh on Sunday registered a three-run win over Zimbabwe after a dramatic final over of a crucial T20 World Cup match in which officials had to call back players from the dugout to finish the match as they felt Nurul Hasan’s final delivery. But the stumping appeal was not correct. Bangladesh players were celebrating victory and reached the dugout as Zimbabwe’s Blessing Mujarbani was stumped by Hasan. However, TV replays showed Hassan caught the ball in front of the wicket, which was against the rules, giving Zimbabwe a ‘free hit’ and all players were called back to play the final ball.

Zimbabwe now needed four runs to win. The players celebrating Bangladesh’s victory left the field after shaking hands but returned to play the last ball. But Zimbabwe’s team could not take advantage of this opportunity and Mujarbani missed again and in the end Bangladesh celebrated the victory again. Bangladesh scored 150 for seven, thanks to opener Najmul Hossain Shanto’s (71 off 55 balls) first half-century in the shortest format of cricket. Zimbabwe lost several wickets in response to the target, taking their score of 35 for four in the sixth over but Sean Williams kept the team’s hopes alive with a half-century of 64 off 42 balls. Williams was dismissed in the 19th over, leaving Zimbabwe 16 runs needed off the last six balls.

Mosaddek Hossain bowled the most important over of his career, he dismissed Brad Invas (02) on the second ball but Richard Nagarawa hit him for a four and a six off the next two balls to keep the team in the running. However, Hossain stumped Nagarawa off the next ball, leaving Zimbabwe needing five runs off the last ball. After the last ball (which was declared a no ball) again such an incident happened which is rarely seen. It was Bangladesh’s second win in the tournament, having previously lost to South Africa by 104 runs. Zimbabwe suffered their first defeat in the Super 12 stage. Bangladesh (4) are now second in the points table, with two more matches to play while Zimbabwe (3) are fourth.

Earlier, Shanto also suffered a muscle strain in the beginning and once he escaped the threat of run out. He hit seven fours and a six during his innings. The left-hander shared a 54-run partnership with skipper Shakib Al Hasan (23 off 20 balls) and a 36-run partnership with Afif Hossain (29 off 19 balls). Zimbabwe’s fielding was not good as they missed many catches and run outs. Electing to bat after winning the toss, Bangladesh lost two wickets for 32 runs in the powerplay with pacer Blessing Mujarbani picking up the wickets of Soumya Sarkar (nil) and Liton Das (14 off 12 balls) in his opening spell. But Shanto and Shakib held the innings together and shared a 54-run partnership in 44 balls. Both of them scored runs on short and full length balls. The performance of Zimbabwe’s fielders was sluggish as Bangladesh easily hit fours. Zimbabwe played a bet on the bowling of left-arm spinner Sean Williams and it also benefited from which they took the wicket of Shakib. The ball touched his bat and Mujarbani dived and took the catch.

Shanto, however, continued to dominate and completed his fifty in the 13th over with one run. He then hit Brad Invas for the first six of his innings and then hit two more boundaries to make 17 runs in the 16th over. Richard Nagarawa bowled tightly in the next over. Evans dropped Afif’s catch in the 19th over and the batsman made good use of the opportunity to hit a six in a slog sweep to make 12 runs in the over. Bangladesh lost three wickets in the last over. With this, the team scored 87 runs in the last 10 overs.
