Fitting into the team biggest challenge of my career while playing for Australia: Khawaja

London. Pakistan-born Australian Test opener Usman Khawaja believes the biggest challenge in his career has been finding a place in the team by staying true to himself and earning the respect of his teammates through his on-field performances. Islamabad-born Khawaja became the first Pakistan-born cricketer to play Test cricket for Australia in 2011. Khawaja told the International Cricket Council, “The biggest challenge of my entire career playing for Australia has been to fit into the team.” Have to earn and on the other hand have to be comfortable in your personality.

The 36-year-old is part of the Australian squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, starting here on Wednesday. Khawaja, who scored 4495 runs in 60 Tests for Australia, is an integral part of the national team but despite some good scores, the left-handed batsman was dropped after the 2019 Ashes series. After scoring runs in the Sheffield Shield, Khawaja returned to the Test team for the 2021 Ashes and scored centuries in both innings of the Sydney Test. He said, “Now I am definitely able to present myself in a better way. There are two things behind this. One, as I am getting older, I don’t think about frivolous things and I am in the last phase of my career, so I can do whatever I want.

Second, I have grown up playing with the players I am playing with. I have played with him a lot while playing for New South Wales. I grew up playing with everyone, so it makes things easy for me. Even when I came into Australian cricket, I was a young player from a subcontinent background trying to break into an Australian cricket team dominated by white players. Felt and there was a mold for Australian cricket at that time and that mold is no more.
