Domingo indicated Shakib can play as a pure batsman in the second test

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has indicated that skipper Shakib Al Hasan could play as a pure batsman in the second and final Test against India next week. Shakib, a left-arm spin bowling allrounder, bowled only 12 overs during India’s first innings and did not bowl a single over in the second innings due to rib and shoulder problems. His 84 in Bangladesh’s second innings was one of the positive aspects of the team. The hosts suffered a 188-run defeat in the first Test.

Domingo said, “He could play as a batsman (only). Obviously he didn’t bowl enough overs. He is still battling with his shoulder and other injuries. Due to this, we had only four bowlers which was a big blow for us. Right-arm medium pacer Ibadat Hossain also could not bowl in the second innings due to a back injury. Domingo said, “Ibadat also got injured so we were left with only three bowlers. It was very difficult to balance the team at that time.

The coach said, “I am not 100 per cent sure whether Shakib will be able to bowl or not. He is definitely available to play as a batsman which is an issue for us. We need an all-rounder.” Asked about Shakib’s dedication to the team, Domingo said, “It is a tricky question. This is a good question. He is very laid-back but takes pride in his performance when it comes to competition. From the outside, you might wonder, does he really care about things?”

“But I know he is very proud of the performance. He doesn’t want to be embarrassed on the field. He is competing 100 per cent.” Bangladesh have included left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed in their 15-member squad for the second Test starting December 22 in Dhaka. Bangladesh’s first innings was reduced to 150 runs after which India, who scored 404 runs in the first innings, set a tough target of 513 runs in front of the hosts. “We wanted to compete,” Domingo said. India are a good team but once again a poor session with the bat ruined our chances in the match.

“Four hundred is a good score but it can be dealt with in Chittagong. We shouldn’t have been bowled out for 150 in the first innings. The most disappointing thing is the poor decision making by the batsmen. Domingo claimed that there is a lack of confidence in the top order. He said, “There is a lack of confidence in the top order. We are unable to find a way out of the difficult situation. Many of the top five or six players did not play well or were not as consistent as I expected. The coach was all praise for Zakir Hasan, who scored a century in the second innings. He said, “The young player who did not play Test with us is full of confidence at the moment. He has shown us how to do it. He played really well.
