Hobart. Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine announced his retirement on Friday after the end of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield first-class match against Queensland. Wicket-keeper batsman Penn played a total of 35 Test matches for Australia, of which he captained in 23 Test matches from 2018 to 2021. Paine became Australia’s 46th Test captain after Steve Smith was stripped of his captaincy in South Africa in 2018 after being implicated in a ball-tampering scandal.

Paine stood down as Test captain in 2021 after it was revealed he had sent offensive messages to a former Cricket Tasmania employee. Paine made his Test debut in 2010 against Pakistan at Lord’s. He averaged 32.63 in Test matches with a highest score of 92. Apart from this, he took 157 catches and stumped out as a wicketkeeper. He also played 35 One Day Internationals for Australia.
