Train accident in Bengal, five killed

Kolkata. West Bengal A major train accident took place in Jalpaiguri in K Jalpaiguri on Thursday evening, in which five people have died and dozens have been injured. The Bikaner-Guwahati Express derailed near Domohani in Jalpaiguri at around 5 pm on Thursday. Relief and rescue operations were going on till late in the night and many passengers are feared trapped in the coaches. The rescue operation is getting difficult due to darkness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the phone soon after the accident. Bikaner Express had left from Bikaner in Rajasthan on Tuesday night. The train had left for Guwahati from Patna railway station at 5.44 am on Thursday, about 12 hours after which the accident happened. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the top officials of the state are monitoring the relief and rescue operations. Health facilities were provided to the injured at the earliest.

Meanwhile, it has been told that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav will visit Jalpaiguri to take stock of the relief and rescue operations and to know the condition of the injured. He told by tweeting that he will reach Jalpaiguri on Friday morning. Meanwhile, the Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the dead, Rs 1 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 to the less serious ones.
