Legendary Indian footballer Balram hospitalized

Tulsidas Balram, one of the country’s legendary footballers who played a key role in India’s title win at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, has been admitted to a multi-specialty hospital here due to urinary infection and stomach problem. India won the title for the second time by defeating South Korea 2-1 in the final of the Jakarta Asian Games and since then the team could not repeat this feat again. Balram is 87 and belongs to the golden generation of Indian football in the 1950s and 1960s where he paired up with legends like Chuni Goswami and PK Banerjee.

A medical bulletin released by the hospital on Thursday said Balram was admitted to the hospital on December 26 after complaining of loss of appetite, flatulence and urinary infection. The hospital said Balaram, considered one of India’s most veteran strikers, is under the supervision of a team of doctors. West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Biswas met the ailing former footballer and promised all possible help.
