New Delhi: Amid rising concerns over the rising COVID-19 cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a recent address to the nation had announced that vaccination against COVID-19 for 15-18 year olds will start from January 3. While the precautionary dose for healthcare, frontline workers and people above 60 will be administered from January 10. The announcement was made by the PM amid rising Covid cases involving the new Omron version of the virus. In his address, PM Modi said that the precautionary dose will also be available from January 10 next year to citizens above 60 years of age and with comorbidities on the advice of their doctor. As per the announcement, people aged 60 years and above will be given the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine from January 10 next year if they are suffering from certain co-morbid conditions. Who will get the dose of COVID precaution?
According to Dr RS Sharma, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Authority, people above the age of 60, who are eligible for the COVID-19 precautionary dose, will need a comorbidity certificate to take the booster shot. Dr Sharma said the procedure would be the same as was followed when the Covid-19 vaccination was opened up to the above 45 category of people who were suffering from specified co-morbidities.
What is the precautionary dose?
The precautionary dose mentioned by the PM refers to the third dose of vaccine for those who have been fully vaccinated. According to media reports, the government is likely to allow precautionary dosing based on 20 specific comorbidities including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stem cell transplant, kidney disease or dialysis, cirrhosis, cancer, sickle cell disease, and prolonged use at present . Individuals eligible for booster dose can upload a certificate of co-morbidity signed by any registered medical practitioner on Co-Win 2.0 at the time of self-registration. They can also take a hard copy of it to the vaccination centers.
