Mumbai Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis accused Mumbai Police of not taking seriously the alleged “attack” by Shiv Sainiks on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya. He said that the city police were working like servants of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Fadnavis has written a letter to Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla in this regard.

In a letter sent on April 24, he has urged Bhalla to take cognizance of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and violation of fundamental rights of opposition leaders and demanded strict action in this regard. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Fadnavis said Somaiya had informed Khar police that he was coming to meet Independent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana on Saturday night.

According to Fadnavis, after meeting the Rana couple, Somaiya told the police that they could be attacked. They had demanded that the crowd gathered outside the Khar police station in suburban Mumbai (where the couple was taken after their arrest) was dispersed. The former chief minister said that despite informing the police about the imminent danger, the crowd was not dispersed and Somaiya was attacked.
