4669 from the sale of five teams of the first Women’s Premier League (WPL), by the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI). 99 crore while Adani Sportsline spent the highest amount of Rs 1289 crore for the Ahmedabad team. Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals have 912. Successful bids were made for Rs 99 crore, Rs 901 crore and Rs 810 crore. Capri Global Holdings bought the Lucknow team for Rs 757 crore.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted, “Today is a historic day in cricket. The bidding for the first women’s premier league teams broke the records of the first men’s IPL 2008. Congratulations to the winners, a total of 4669. Earlier, the BCCI had sold the media rights of the league to Viacom18 for Rs 951 crore, which would fetch Rs 79 million per match for five years. Even before a single ball has been bowled in the tournament, WPL has become the second biggest T20 league in the world after IPL.

In the year 2021, when the bidding for the Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchises took place, the Adani group, which failed to buy the IPL team, officially entered Indian cricket by buying the women’s team of WPL. Many were already calling the league the Women’s IPL but the BCCI secretary revealed the name on Wednesday. In a series of tweets, Shah said, “The BCCI has named the league as the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Let’s start the journey.

“This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sporting fraternity,” Shah said. The eight franchises of the men’s IPL were sold before the first tournament in 2008 for $723.59 million.

Talking to the media, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said, “If you remember, the bids for the men’s IPL in 2008 were less than if you calculate on the basis of multiplier and factor in inflation. So the valuation is higher than the men’s IPL at that time. It is a good sign for women’s cricket.” Shah, who was seated with Dhumal, said that the highest bid for each city-based franchise was declared the winner. “There was a big difference between the dialects,” he said.

Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders made unsuccessful bids for the Jaipur and Kolkata franchises for Rs 180 crore and Rs 666 crore respectively. The player auction of WPL will be held next month and the first tournament will be played in March. The BCCI on Monday approved 17 technical bids for the bidding which took place behind closed doors at a five-star hotel here on Wednesday. Seven IPL franchises were in the race to buy the team, out of which Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad failed.

Haldiram, a multinational maker of sweets and snacks, also submitted a bid on Monday. The BCCI had not fixed any base price for the sale of the teams. A total of 22 matches will be played in the inaugural season with the top team in the league stage directly qualifying for the final. The second and third place teams will compete for a place in the title match. In the player auction to be held next month, each team will have Rs 12 crore and will have to buy a minimum of 15 players and a maximum of 18 players.

Up to five foreign players, including one associate player, will be allowed to feature in the playing XI. Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani said, “India’s women cricketers have always made the country proud in the global sporting arena – be it the World Cup, the Asian Cup or the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.” ‘This new women’s league will once again shine a light on the talent, strength and potential of our girls. I am sure that our women’s Mumbai Indians team will take the Mumbai Indians brand of fearless and entertaining cricket to a whole new level.

Mumbai Indians also have teams in the ongoing ILT20 in UAE and SA20 in South Africa. The Diageo-owned RCB franchise said it was waiting patiently to be a part of women’s cricket. “Gender inclusivity is a value at Diageo that embraces diversity in the widest possible sense,” said the franchisee. It is a suitable asset for the Diageo India-owned franchise. “RCB chairman Prathamesh Mishra said in a statement,” We have stopped all our investments in overseas teams for this team and positively appreciate this achievement. We were very happy to make it come true.
