Kuhneman returns home after learning ‘fantastic tricks’ from Jadeja

Rising Australia left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhneman, who made an impressive debut in the Test series against India, says he has learned “some great tricks” on the skill from star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Kuhneman said Jadeja kept his word and talked about every aspect for 15 minutes after India won the series 2-1 with the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad drawn on Sunday.

Fox Cricket quoted Kuhneman as saying, “Probably for 15 minutes he (Jadeja) was teaching me some great tricks. We talked about everything.” He said, “He gave me some good tips for the next time I come to the subcontinent and also taught me some tricks for the home country.” The spinner was brought in as a replacement for Mitchell Swepson who had returned home for the birth of his first child ahead of the Second Test in Delhi.

The inexperienced spinner often struggled to break into the Queensland team when Swepson was available and managed only 35 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 34.80. But he impressed on his debut in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, after which he was called up for the tour of India and Kuhneman did not disappoint, taking nine wickets in three Tests. He took a total of six wickets, including a maiden five-for in the innings, playing an important role in helping Australia win the third Test at Indore.

It was Australia’s veteran spinner Nathan Lyon who arranged a conversation between Kuhneman and Jadeja after the Ahmedabad Test. “Nathan Lyons helped arrange it as well,” Kuhneman said. He (Jadeja) was impressed with Todd (Murphy), Gage (Lyon) and me so it was really nice to hear from him. He was very nice and asked to be in touch anytime. He even sent me a message on Instagram so it was great.
