The eruption of the La Palma volcano turns 50 days and there is no indication that it will end
The eruption of the La Palma volcano, Cumbre Vieja, turned 50 active days this Sunday with no data pointing to a short-term completion. The lava covered a total of 992.4 hectares, affecting or destroying 2,719 buildings and infrastructures so far.
The natural phenomenon that began on September 19 has already forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 residents from nearby areas, of which more than 2,000 are directly affected by having their residence within the perimeter of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
Of these people with homes in the area of the eruption, 1,576 are residents of Los Llanos de Aridane, 391 of El Paso and 122 are from the municipality of Tazarote.
According to the latest update of the Copernicus monitoring carried out yesterday afternoon, the lava covered a total of 992.4 hectares, affecting or destroying 2,719 buildings and infrastructure so far.
On the other hand, of the 2,719 infrastructures damaged by the lava, 2,587 were destroyed and 132 were damaged, while with respect to the roads, 73.4 kilometers of roads were destroyed and another 3.3 kilometers could be damaged.
The air quality is especially unfavorable during this weekend in the municipalities near the La Palma volcano -El Paso, Fuencaliente, Tijarafe and Los Llanos de Aridane.

However, according to the latest report from the National Security Directorate (DSN), published this morning, the weather continues to be favorable for maritime and aeronautical operations.
As for the earthquakes, the “seismic swarm” is still active south of Cumbre Vieja, where the earthquakes are mainly occurring at depths of between 10 and 15 kilometers.
However, the eruptive process continues and the lavas pass towards the northwest without affecting new surfaces.
Finally, the Volcanic Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (Pevolca) does not consider that there are data that indicate that the end of the volcanic eruption will occur in the short term, considering as relevant the decrease in seismicity despite the earthquake from 4.5 to 36 kilometers deep late yesterday.
