India’s top order faltered, now 100 runs away from the target

Chasing a target of 145, India lost four crucial top-order wickets early on on the third day of the second and final Test cricket match against Bangladesh, taking the match to an exciting stage. Bangladesh scored 231 runs in their second innings and set a target of 145 runs in front of India. The Indian team, which is trying to clean sweep this series and get important points in the World Test Championship, did not get off to a good start and were 45 for four at the end of the third day’s play. India is still 100 runs away from the target.

The pitch is getting turn and bounce and in such a situation it will not be easy for the Indian team to reach the target. He has only two specialist batsmen left in Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer who played big half-centuries in the first innings. Nightwatchman Akshar Patel’s (26 not out) counter-attacking strategy has proved effective so far. Another nightwatchman Jaydev Unadkat is playing with him for three runs. Bangladesh’s batsmen also had a lot of trouble with turn and bounce. In such a situation, the counter-attacking strategy of some of his batsmen proved to be correct.

These included Liton Das (73) and opener Zakir Hasan (51), besides tail-enders Nurul Hasan (31) and Taskin Ahmed (31). Bangladesh had scored 227 runs in the first innings, in response to which India scored 314 runs and took a lead of 87 runs. All five bowlers from India achieved success. Akshar Patel took three wickets for 68 runs, Ravichandran Ashwin took two wickets for 66 runs and Mohammad Siraj took two wickets for 41 runs. Apart from these, Umesh Yadav and Unadkat got one wicket each. India did not start well and lost the wicket of skipper KL Rahul (one) in the third over itself.

Shakib Al Hasan (1 for 21) took a sharp turn towards the off stump and the ball took the outside edge of his bat and went into the gloves of wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan. Rahul has struggled to score runs throughout this series and it won’t be easy for him to make it into the playing XI in the home series against Australia. The reliable Cheteshwar Pujara (six) was the other batsman to be dismissed as he went on to play a straight ball from off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraj (3 for 12) defensively but could not defend properly and was stumped.

Mehidy Hasan then got Shubman Gill (seven) stumped out by dodging and then caught Virat Kohli (one) at short leg to put India in deep trouble. Earlier, Akshar troubled the batsmen a lot with his turn and bouncing balls. He dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim (nine) lbw in the morning session with a similar ball and Mehidy Hasan (0) after lunch. In the second session, he dodged the fast-scoring Nurul Hasan on a flying ball and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant completed the rest of the work by stumping him out.

Zakir, Bangladesh’s best performer in this series, held one end in the morning session but lost his concentration in the second session. He made it easy for Siraj standing at deep third man by slashing Umesh’s ball. In the Indian Premier League, the innings of Liton Das, who was selected in the Kolkata Knight Riders team, was ended by Siraj, whose seam movement he could not understand and got bowled. Liton shared a 60-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Taskin. Bangladesh started the morning at seven without loss and lost four wickets in the first session. Meanwhile he added 64 runs.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (five) was the first batsman to be dismissed lbw by Ashwin. Siraj then sent Mominul Haq (five), who scored a half-century in the first innings, to the pavilion. He could not guess Siraj’s length correctly and the ball kissed his bat and got into Pant’s gloves. Captain Shakib Al Hasan (13) gave a simple catch to Shubman Gill standing at cover in an attempt to drive Unadkat’s ball. This is the second time Shakib misjudges the length and is caught in the covers.
