Sports Minister Thakur inaugurates 300 bedded hostel at SAI Patiala Center

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday inaugurated a new 300-bed hostel built at a cost of Rs 26.77 crore at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Patiala centre. Thakur inaugurated the new facility on the occasion along with renovated hostels dedicated to former sports greats Major Dhyan Chand and PT Usha, the upgradation of which cost the government Rs 5.25 crore. Thakur also inaugurated the Sports Performance Analysis course, a first-of-its-kind addition to the academic curriculum at the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) here.

Addressing the first batch of students of this course, Thakur said, “The inclusion of sports science and sports performance analysis in the curriculum is very important to assess the true potential of an athlete. This will go a long way in improving India’s overall performance.” Thakur interacted with over 400 athletes and trainees on the occasion and exhorted them to focus on sports and make the country proud. He sought information from the athletes about the facilities available at the center and the improvement in the present system. The players of SAI Patiala Center won a total of 72 medals in six sports in national level competitions in the year 2021, which increased to 195 this year. At international level SAI Patiala athletes have won 19 medals in competitions like Commonwealth Championships, European Open and Junior World Championships.
