IPL 2023: Practicing ‘wide yorker’ has helped, says Ishant

Ahmedabad. Veteran fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who played a key role in Delhi Capitals’ victory by defending 12 runs in the final over against Gujarat Titans, said practicing the ‘wide yorker’ has paid off for him. Delhi kept their hopes alive in the Indian Premier League with a close five-run win on Tuesday. This is their third win in nine matches and they will have to win their remaining five matches to make it to the playoffs. Ishant was not given a chance in the beginning of the tournament but after that when he was included in the playing XI, he bowled very economically. He has given runs at the rate of 6.5 per over in four matches so far and has taken six wickets.

The experienced fast bowler, who played 105 Tests for India, kept a tight rein on Rahul Tewatia, who was looking dangerous in the 20th over against Gujarat, and showed him the way to the pavilion. Earlier in the over, Tewatia had brought Gujarat close to victory by hitting three consecutive sixes over Enrique Norkia. Ishant said after the match, “We practice bowling with the new ball but at the same time we also practice ‘wide yorkers’ and it paid off for us today.” I trusted myself and did the ‘wide yorker’.

He said, “When you practice in the nets, then you also plan how to bowl to a particular batsman. It is all about executing this strategy and trusting yourself at all times. “Ishant said,” We (bowlers) do not think about the target. It is all about executing your strategy properly. We look ahead and hope for the best.
