England hope Stokes will reverse his decision to retire from ODIs before the World Cup

England are hopeful that star all-rounder Ben Stokes will reverse his decision to retire from one-day cricket ahead of next year’s ODI World Cup in India. Stokes recently played a key role in the team’s victory in the World Cup Finals. He scored an unbeaten 53 in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan. He was unbeaten on 92 in the ODI World Cup final against New Zealand in 2019. England’s Test captain Stokes, however, quit ODI cricket this year saying that it was not possible for him to play all three formats.

England’s limited overs coach Matthew Mott expressed hope that Stokes would change his mind. He said, “When he told me about saying goodbye to ODI cricket, I was the first to say that I am with him in every decision he takes. I also said that there is no need to retire. He can play whenever he wants. It is his decision. Next year is the World Cup and we don’t have to take much T20 cricket. But it’s up to him to decide.” Mott said, “The more he can play for us, the better. He is doing a fantastic job as Test captain but he is a vital part of our strategy in limited overs cricket. He is an expert player of all three disciplines. He is the kind of player who can win matches on his own.
