Shankar Muthusamy in final of BWF World Junior Championship

Indian junior badminton player Shankar Muthusamy advanced to the men’s U-19 singles final of the BWF World Junior Championships with a straight game win over Thailand’s Pantchaphon Tiraratsakul here on Saturday. Fourth seed Muthusamy defeated the Thailand player 21-13 21-15 in the semi-final that lasted 40 minutes. He will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Kuo Kuan Lin of Chinese Taipei and Byung Jae Kim of Korea in the final on Sunday.

India has so far won one gold, three silver and five bronze medals in the history of the tournament. Lakshya Sen won the last medal in the form of bronze in 2018. London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal is the only Indian to have won the Junior World Championship title in 2008. She also reached the finals in 2006 but could only win a silver medal then. Cyril Verma also came close to winning the title in 2015 but lost in the final to Chia Hung Lu of Chinese Taipei. Aparna Popat (1996) is another Indian who reached the World Junior Finals.
