Archer back in England squad for ODI series in South Africa

Pacer Jofra Archer will return to the England squad for next month’s ODI series in South Africa after nearly two years out due to injury. Archer played a key role in the team’s World Cup title win in 2019 but since March 2021 he could not play for England due to injury. The 27-year-old fast bowler had to undergo two surgeries for elbow related injuries and then a ‘stress fracture’ in his lower back hampered his comeback.

Last month, he joined the England Lions team for training and bowled nine overs against the senior England team in a warm-up match in Abu Dhabi. This raised hopes of him regaining full fitness. He has now been included in the 14-man squad for the three ODI tour against South Africa. The series, which was postponed in December 2020 due to the COVID-19 threat, is being held now. Three matches will be conducted within six days from January 27 to February 1. England: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Joffra Archer, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, David Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Ollie Stone, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes.
