Talking to Rahane helped me play spinners: Handscomb

Indore. Australian middle-order batsman Peter Handscomb recalled a conversation with former India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane that helped him face spin bowling in the subcontinent. Handscomb shared the dressing room with Rahane during the 2016 IPL. During this, Rahane told Handscomb about the use of feet and wrists during the batting to the spinners. Handscomb told the Sydney Morning Herald, “He was playing the spinners easily towards midwicket, using his back foot. I was surprised by this.

He said, “After watching Rahane batting against spinners, I was thinking that I need someone to teach me this. I talked to him about how to use steps in batting against spinners. “Handscomb said,” When you use your back foot, it helps in scoring runs. If the ball is pitching close to the wicket, you can use the front foot. You have to respect that with defensive play on good balls.

Handscomb, who scored an unbeaten 72 off 142 balls in the first innings of the second Test played in Delhi, got stumped in the second innings trying to make a sweep shot without opening the account. Handscomb said, “India forced me to eat gacha in these circumstances. He didn’t give me a chance to run and score but gave me the greed to hit a boundary. I fell for his ploy. ”””’ He said, ” For me it’s about staying strong and making a fresh start. I came to the crease probably with the thought that I am still unbeaten on 72 and starting my innings from where I had left in the first innings. Handscomb said there is positivity in the Australian camp even after losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy in the opening two matches of the series.

“Every player in our group supports each other. We are looking at the positive aspects from the match played in Delhi. We had a lead in the first innings and were in a good position in the second innings as well.
