Pakistan International Airlines rated worst in terms of safety globally – study

According to a study conducted by AirlineRatings, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Pakistan’s national air carrier, and a few other airlines have been declared the worst airlines globally in terms of safety. The ranking system ranks airlines on primary parameters and gives them 1-7 stars. The study gives PIA the lowest one-star rating. Along with Pakistan International Airlines, there are 6 other airlines that have got a one star rating in terms of safety and they are Air Algeri, Srivijay Air, Scat, Iran Esman Airlines, Airblue and Blue Wing. According to AirlineRatings, airlines get three stars if they avoid fatalities in the long term, two stars if they avoid serious incidents, and one star if they pass audits and are in compliance with COVID. Pakistan’s crashed airlines

In its second landing attempt in Karachi in 2020, an Airbus A320 of Pakistan International Airlines crashed in a crowded place, killing 100 people. In addition to runway intrusion and separation loss, PIA has experienced a number of incidents involving smoke indicator and engine failures in recent years. Srivijaya Air, an Indonesian-based airline, lost 62 passengers and crew members last January when their Boeing 737-500 plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Jakarta. An ATR 72-200 of Iran Esman Airlines crashed in the Zagros Mountains of Iran in 2018, killing all 66 people on board. In July 2014, an Air Algier MD-83 flying to Algiers crashed down in northern Mali, killing all 116 aboard.

IOSA not mandatory ( Pakistan International Airlines)

Kazakhstan-based SCAT Airlines made the list in January 2013, losing 21 passengers and crew and one Bombardier CRJ200. Last but not least, Suriname-based Blue Wings Airlines lost an Antonov An-28 as well as 19 people in 2008 when their landing at Lava Antino Airport in Benzdorp, Suriname, went wrong. Of the seven one-star airlines, only Air Algerie received the audit tick. As part of this category, the airline is assessed on how well it complies with IATA’s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) regime. This means assessing its operational management and control systems. However, IOSA is not mandatory, and not every airline participates. Following the incident of Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 in 2020, PIA was banned from flying to the EU and USA.
