Team India announced for New Zealand tour, Hardik and Shikhar will be in command

Adelaide. All-rounder Hardik Pandya was on Monday appointed the captain of the Indian team for the three-match T20 International series against New Zealand, with the BCCI announcing three different captains for the upcoming four series across all formats of cricket. The T20 series will begin in Wellington on November 18, a day after the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia. Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan will captain the Indian team in the ODI series starting November 25 in New Zealand.
Rishabh Pant will be the vice-captain of the team for both these series in New Zealand. Regular skipper Rohit Sharma, star batsman Virat Kohli, opener Lokesh Rahul, wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have been rested to manage the players’ workload. Rohit will return to lead the team for the ODI and Test series in Bangladesh. Star batsmen Kohli and Ashwin will also return to the squad for the Bangladesh tour in which India will play three ODIs and two Tests. The tour will start from December 4. This is the first time that the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced four teams at once.
Ravindra Jadeja will also make a comeback against Bangladesh. He was ruled out of the ongoing T20 World Cup after suffering a knee injury during the Asia Cup. Chairman of the selection committee Chetan Sharma Sharma said that due to the workload management of the players, different teams have been announced. During the online press conference, he said, “No one had asked for relaxation. All the decisions were made under the management of the workload of the players. We have the reports of the medical team on who, when and how to rest.” When asked what is the future of Karthik considering his performance in the first three matches of the T20 World Cup and now he has been rested for the New Zealand tour as well. Chetan said that all is not over for the Tamil Nadu batsman. The chief selector said, “The World Cup will be over in a few days so we had to decide who is to be rested and who is not. He (Karthik) has been doing well and he is available for us. But this time we thought of trying different players after the World Cup. Karthik suffered a back injury during India’s previous match against South Africa and it looks doubtful to play in Wednesday’s match against Bangladesh. But Chetan did not give any update about Kartik’s injury. He said, “The medical team is looking after him, it is an internal matter, so it will not be right to disclose anything here.” He is a part of the World Cup and he is doing well. The second match of the T20 series will be played at Mount Monganui on November 20 while the final match will be played in Napier on November 22. The ODI series will begin in Auckland on November 28 while the next two matches will be held in Hamilton and Christchurch on November 27 and 30 respectively. The Indian team will start the Bangladesh tour with three ODIs which will be played in Dhaka (on December 4, 7 and 10). This will be followed by two Tests in Chittagong (14 to 18 December) and Dhaka (22 to 26 December). Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the T20 World Cup due to a ‘stress fracture’ in his back, has not been picked for both the tours as he is yet to fully recover from the injury and the selectors do not want to rush his return. When asked about Bumrah, Sharma said, “We have to manage the workload of the players. We have to take it seriously. The medical team of the NCA (National Cricket Academy) is taking good care of him (Bumrah). “He will definitely be a part of the squad against Australia but we don’t want to rush his comeback against Bangladesh,” he said. He will return soon. The Indian team will tour Australia for four Tests and three ODIs in February-March next year.
