Tendulkar celebrates 50th birthday by cutting cake at Wankhede

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th birthday was celebrated during the Indian Premier League match between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings at his home ground Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday. Tendulkar’s birthday is on April 24 but it was celebrated two days earlier in the presence of spectators at the Wankhede ground. Tendulkar had said that reaching 50 was the ‘slowest half-century’ of his career. He cut the cake near the dugout of Mumbai Indians in the second strategic break during Punjab Kings’ batting.

The event was organized by Mumbai Indians. Tendulkar represented this team in the IPL from 2008-2013. He remained associated with Mumbai Indians even after saying goodbye to the game. Tendulkar’s face mask was presented to over 30,000 fans at the Wankhede Stadium on the occasion. The veteran batsman, who wore the number 10 jersey for India and Mumbai Indians, started chanting ‘Sachin…Sachin’ after the 10th over of Punjab Kings’ innings.

The franchise had earlier said in a release, “Sachin made the number 10 jersey iconic in cricket and it is also nearing 10 years since his last match for India. That match was also played at the Wankhede Stadium. On this occasion, we will celebrate the illustrious career of the highest run scorer with most Tests and ODI appearances for India on Saturday. Additionally, outside the Garware Pavilion, a large replica of Tendulkar’s number 10 jersey was placed for fans to click photos.
