INDvsAUS: Australia will miss Zampa against India: Sriram

Bangalore. Former Australia assistant coach Sreedharan Sriram is disappointed that spinner Adam Zampa was not selected in the Australian squad for the four-Test series against India starting February 9. Australia have included experienced off-spinner Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, leg-spinner Mitchell Swapson and young off-spinner Todd Murphy in their 18-man squad. Sriram, who was associated with the Australian team for six years, told ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ that I would have liked to see Zampa bowling here (in India) because he has pace. He has the ability to get help off the pitch.

He said that this is something that I keep an eye on which bowler troubles the batsman with the help of the pitch. I believe Zampa is that kind of bowler.” Sriram, who played eight ODIs for India, said Zampa was very excited about the India tour and had even spoken to him about it.

He said that he was more excited about coming to India than anyone else. He wanted to play Test matches in India. He called me twice two months ago to say that he wants to make it to the team and is very excited. Sriram said that for this he had started playing first-class matches for New South Wales. He also did well, taking three wickets each in both the innings, so he is quite disappointed not to be picked for the tour.

Sriram said that the real test for Australia would be to keep spin at a high level for a long period of time. He said that you can bowl a little slower or you can bowl faster but you have to get help from the pitch and for that your action has to be really strong. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Nathan Lyon have been able to maintain their action for long periods even in difficult conditions. It will be a challenge for Agar and Swapson to do so.
