The Dawn Award: Ash Barty wins Australia’s top sporting award for the second time

Ash Barty, who retired from tennis two months after winning the Australian Open singles title this year, has won Australia’s top sporting award for the second year in a row. Barty has been given The Don Award which is named after the famous cricketer Don Bradman. Barty retired from tennis in March at the age of 25.

Barty, a three-time Grand Slam winner, was the world number one at the time. Besides Barty, Olympic gold medalist Sally Pearson (2012, 2014) and Olympic champion pole vaulter Steve Hooker have won the award twice (2008 and 2009).
