Australia tour of India, Delhi may get to host Test after five years

New Delhi. When the Australian team visits India in February-March next year to play four Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Delhi may get a chance to host a Test match after more than five years. Other venues that could be chosen to host the remaining three Test matches include Ahmedabad and Dharamsala and either Nagpur or Chennai. The series assumes significance as it will be the last four matches of the second World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for India.

In fact, India will have to beat Australia 4-0 to reach the final, which will be extremely challenging for the Rohit Sharma-led side. India and Australia have traditionally played a four-Test series but in the International Cricket Council’s next Future Tours Program (FTP) starting in 2024, it will be a five-match series. According to the rotation formula of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), Delhi is certain to host the Test match. The last Test match in Delhi was played against Sri Lanka in December 2017.

A senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of confidentiality, “Delhi may get to host the second Test match out of the four Test matches. The schedule of matches will be revealed after the meeting of the tour and program committee. Dharamsala which hosted its only Test match against Australia in March 2017 may get to host the third Test match in the upcoming series. Australia may start the tour in Chennai or Hyderabad as Bengaluru earlier this year Hosted the Test match against Sri Lanka. It was a day night test match. The fourth and final Test match can be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It is yet to be decided which of these four Test matches will be a day-night match.

The BCCI has so far hosted three Test matches with the pink ball. The matches were played at Eden Gardens against Bangladesh, Motera against England and Bengaluru against Sri Lanka. The BCCI has hosted eight Test matches after the break of Kovid-19. Of these, four Test matches were played against England (Chennai and Ahmedabad), two Test matches against New Zealand (Kanpur and Mumbai) and as many Test matches against Sri Lanka (Chandigarh and Bengaluru).
