This traditional sport of Punjab will now be included in National Games, IOA approves

Gatka, the traditional martial art of Punjab, will be included in the 37th National Games. Especially this time Gatka will also be played in these National Games to be held in October. This decision has been taken by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Medals won in exhibition games are not included in the medal tally but Gatka being part of the National Games this year means it could be included as a competitive sport in the next Games.
 
Harjeet Singh Grewal, president of the National Gatka Association, has given information in this regard. He said it was long awaited. A meeting has also been held with the officials of Indian Olympic Association and GTCC in this regard. This approval has been received only after this meeting. Now Gatka will be included in the National Games. This will prove to be a big step for the progress of Gatka game. The game of Gatka will be promoted more in all the states.
 
Indian National Gatka Association President Harjit Singh Grewal said, “We have been waiting for a long time for this game to be recognized by the IOA.” The inclusion of four indigenous sports including Gatka and Kalaripayattu was approved. Gatka is a style of martial arts that uses three to 3.5 feet long wooden sticks and a shield made of leather to fend off the opponent.
