Colombia beat South Korea 2-0 with cancer-defeating Cassido’s goal

Sydney. Colombia beat South Korea 2-0 in their opening match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Tuesday, thanks to a goal from cancer survivor Linda Cacido. Real Madrid forward Cacido was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 15. He celebrated by running towards the Colombian fans at the Sydney Football Ground after scoring his country’s second goal in the match. Eighteen-year-old Cassido is an inspirational figure on and off the field. He scored in the 39th minute of the match to increase Colombia’s lead to 2–0.

Earlier, Catalina Usme opened Colombia’s account by converting a penalty in the 30th minute of the match. Apart from Cassido, another teenage player made his mark in this match. South Korea’s Cassie Fair became the youngest player to play in a World Cup match at the age of 16. She came on as a substitute in the second half of the match. Colombia will face Germany on Sunday in their next Group H match, while South Korea will face Morocco on Monday. Germany beat Morocco 6-0 on Monday.
