Tunisia held Denmark to a goalless draw in World Cup football match
Tunisia held European Championship semi-finalists Denmark to a goalless draw in World Cup football on Tuesday. This is the first goalless match of the current tournament. The stadium was packed with Tunisia’s supporters in their Group D match after Saudi Arabia’s upset victory over Argentina. Tunisia is one of four teams from the region competing in the World Cup in the Gulf country for the first time and holding Denmark to a draw was an achievement for them. Tunisia created the better chances during the match.
The team came close to taking the lead early in the second half but Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel made a brilliant save. Issam Zebali, who plays for Danish club Odense, was brilliantly cleared away by Schmeichel. His brilliant save reminded him of his father and former Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, who defended the goal in a similar fashion. This match marked the return of Christian Eriksen of Denmark to the big tournament.
He had suffered a heart attack during a Euro 2020 match about a year and a half ago. He created many great chances in the match but did not get success. His brilliant effort from distance was saved by Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Dahme. Tunisia were threatened with a penalty in the closing minutes of the match but after a review by the video assistant referee of the handball, the decision was made to continue the game.
Denmark have been in fine form since their Euro 2020 performances last year, while Tunisia are trying to progress past the group stage for the first time in their sixth World Cup campaign. Tunisia midfielder Aissa Laidouni showed his team’s prowess early in the match by taking control of the ball from Eriksen with an aggressive sliding tackle. After his effort, the entire stadium erupted in the noise of the Tunisian fans. Both the teams created 13 scoring chances but none were successful. The next match of both the teams will be on 26 November. Denmark will face France and Tunisia will face Australia.
