Will Pant or Karthik play against England, not decided yet: Rohit Sharma

Rishabh Pant got a chance to play his first match in the ongoing T20 World Cup against Zimbabwe but it is not yet decided whether he will play the role of wicketkeeper in the semi-final against England or Dinesh Karthik will return to the team. During the ODI World Cup 2019, India’s No.4 batsman was not decided and there is a constant debate in the current World Cup whether Pant should get preference over Karthik in the playing XI or not.Karthik has not lived up to his role of finisher in the ongoing World Cup while Pant has not been able to do justice to his talent in the limited opportunities he has got in T20 Internationals so far.

Captain Rohit Sharma said it was a strategic move to give Pant a chance against Zimbabwe keeping the semi-finals in mind but did not make any commitment to the question of who will play the wicketkeeper’s role on Thursday. In reference to the reason for playing Pant, Rohit said, “Before the match against Zimbabwe, we didn’t know that we would be playing a semi-final against any team. We wanted to give the left-hander a chance to prepare to face the spinners from New Zealand and England who bowl in the middle overs.

“We thought Rishabh is someone who can do that for us and he needs to be given a chance to spend time at the crease. But what will happen tomorrow, I can’t tell you anything today.” The current World Cup has been very disappointing for Axar Patel. He has conceded runs at a rate of around 10 runs per over but the captain backed the left-arm spinner. “To be honest, I am not worried as he has hardly got a chance to bowl in this tournament.

Apart from the match against Netherlands, he did not complete his quota of overs in any match due to the circumstances. Star batsman Virat Kohli was hit near the groin by Harshal Patel during net practice on Wednesday. The team, however, heaved a sigh of relief when he came out to bat again within a few minutes. Captain Rohit Sharma was hit yesterday but he confirmed that he is fully fit. He said, “I had the ball yesterday but feel fine now. There was some scarring but now it is fine.
